DIGITAL STORY TELLING With Photo Story 3
A TECH TUESDAY Presentation
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 6TH, 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Session Overview
Using Digital Images to tell a story is a GREAT idea for several reasons:
-
Integrating technology into an assignment can be a HUGE motivator for some students.
-
Photo Story 3 is FREE software, available HERE for anyone running an authentic copy of Windows.
At the End of This Session You Will:
-
Be able to take your digital pictures and very easily turn them into a movie to play in Windows Media Player.
-
Have something to show your students TOMORROW.
-
Have projects and ideas to begin with your students soon!
INSERVICE VIDEOS (made with Photo Story...neat, huh?)
The BURNS EFFECT made easy for everyone thanks to Photo Story. This brief video explains the development of the 'Burns Effect', used by filmmaker Ken Burns, as told by comedian Al Franken.

IDEAS FOR Using Digital Story Telling in Your Classes.
During the workshop we talked about several different ways to use Photo Story 3 in class, including the following:
-
To make instructional videos, showing school and/or classroom rules (see the DTPS BOOTROOM video: ). Imagine your students creating the rules, acting/modeling appropriate behaviour at the start of the year, taking digital pictures of what is expected of them and then making a movie of the 'rules'!
-
The idea of having students create BOOK TRAILERS was discussed as a possible way to motivate students to read, and to share with other students. Check out the 'Sammy the Sel' and Zach's Alligator Goes to School' book trailers shown in this tutorial located at Techlearning.com.
-
For students who are in need of extension, Photo Story 3 can be used in lieu of their producing written work. Perhaps they could be given the same assignment as others but have to find/choose pictures rather than words?
- For students who struggle with coming up with words, perhaps they could create a digital story using a combination of a digital Photo Story plus their own spoken word.
- Instead of doing a book report, perhaps students could illustrate the book they read in pictures?
ONLINE RESOURCES
The Screen Actors Guild BookPALS Storyline Online that was shown in class is available HERE .
When having students work with pictures, in most cases they are not LEGALLY allowed to copy whatever pictures they like from internet sites. That is not the case for the following sites however, as all of these contain copyright free pictures and/or free clipart. AS ALWAYS though, please teach your students about the ethical and legal ways to proceed. Despite being copyright free, it is still a great idea to train all students to check the site's terms of use, credit their sources when copying pictures from the internet and to know our district's acceptable use policies!
Simlarly, when they are TRYING TO INSERT music into their digital stories into a digital story, many students will want to find a song on the internet and consequently try to download it illegally. Royalty and copyright free music is available online as well if students do not want to create their own music in the program itself. Again, have them read the terms of use and credit their sources, even if it is legally available for student use!
